6 Movies That Broke The Nigerian Box Office

The cinema culture which seemed dead for many years is gradually experiencing a rebirth. Nollywood movies now gross huge sums from cinemas alone. Below are 6 movies that shook the Box office.

6. MAAMI (N3.30Million)

The movie produced by Kunle Kelani centred around a single mother who gave everything up for her young son until he started longing for his father he never knew made headlines after grossing N3.30Million in 2011.

5. PHONE SWAP (N3.72Million)

Produced and directed by ace producer Kunle Afolayan in 2012. Phone swap featuring Nse Ekpe is a movie that talks about a mistakenly swapped phones that later ended in romance.

4. LAST FLIGHT TO ABUJA (N8.35Million)

Released in 2012, Last Flight To Abuja had some of the biggest names in Nollywood like Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Jide Kosoko and Nigerian born Hollywood star Kaezim kae-Kazim.

3. THE RETURN OF JENIFA (N10Million)

The follow up to Funke Akindele’s Jenifa which recorded a massive success grossed N10Million from cinemas nationwide.

2. HALF OF A YELLOW SUN (N10Million)

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best selling book that was later made into a movie and directed by Biyi Bandele was an instant success even with all the controversies that surrounded the release. With stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Genevieve Nnaji and Onyeka Owenu, Half Of A Yellow Sun made N10 Million in its first week in the cinemas.

1. 30 DAYS IN ATLANTA (N76 MILLION)

Produced by popular comedian AY, 30 Days In Atlanta is the biggest movie yet. Breaking the Nigerian box office record with N76 Million in one week.
